The Ibuki Mountain Driveway is a 17km motor-only road that connects Sekigahara Town in Gifu Prefecture to the summit parking lot of Mt. Ibuki in Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture. Reaching an altitude of 1,260m, this road was constructed starting in 1961 and fully opened in 1965. It serves as a vital route for travelers wishing to access the summit of Mt. The history of this driveway dates back to the commencement of construction in 1961. In June 1964, shortly before full completion, a section up to the Koheiji Koshie Parking Lot began operations following the opening of the nearby Meishin Expressway's Sekigara Interchange. The full route was completed in July 1965, establishing it as a primary access route to the natural wonders of Mt. Ibuki. For decades, it has played a crucial role in balancing regional natural preservation with transport accessibility.
The 17km journey is characterized by ever-changing landscapes as the elevation increases. Near the summit parking lot, visitors can enjoy expansive views of northern Lake Biwa and, depending on weather conditions, even the Sea of Japan (Wakasa Bay). The summit area features a large parking lot capable of accommodating approximately 532 vehicles, and well-maintained hiking trails are available nearby. The scenery transforms beautifully through the seasons, offering lush greenery in spring and vibrant autumn foliage in the fall.
