Ibaraki Flower Park is a sprawling 30-hectare botanical garden located in Ishioka, Ibaraki Prefecture. Operating under the concept of "moving from seeing to feeling," the facility is designed so that visitors can do much more than just observe flowers—they can truly experience them. The park is particularly famous for its roses, featuring 30,000 plants across 800 different varieties, making it one of the largest rose gardens in East Japan. The grounds are divided into two main areas: the "Flower Park" (12 hectares), where you can enjoy diverse floral displays, and the "Fureai no Mori" (18 hectares), a lush area rich in natural greenery.
The facility opened on June 2, 1985, coinciding with the International Science and Technology Exhibition (Tsukuba Expo) held in the Tsukuba Science City area. Its purpose was to enhance floral culture and promote tourism to Ishioka City. Following a major renovation to modernize the facilities, which was completed in 2015, the park rebranded and reopened as "Ibaraki Flower Park" in 2021, taking on its current identity.
The park offers diverse scenery that changes with the seasons. In the Rose Garden, you can witness the breathtaking sight of countless varieties in full bloom. Other highlights include the Skunk Cabbage Garden, where 1,000,000 plants cover 5,000m², and the Lily Garden, home to 12,000 wild lilies. For easy navigation, a "Park Shuttle" runs from the entrance to the Fureai no Mori observatory (approx. 1.2km), allowing you to enjoy the roadside flowers from the comfort of a vehicle.
The best time to visit depends on what you wish to see. From March to June, the spring flowers—especially the roses—are at their peak. You can also enjoy seasonal blooms in October. Since the park is quite vast, we recommend planning your visit with enough time for both walking and enjoying the various activities. Ibaraki Flower Park offers over "100 sensory activities" that go beyond simple sightseeing. You can enjoy physical activities like the 800m-long "Flower Slide" or the 190m-long "Flower Cycle" rail bike. There are also 10 different types of field athletics, allowing visitors to stay active while surrounded by nature.
Located in Ishioka City, the park is near several facilities related to the Tsukuba Science City and other popular tourist spots in Ibaraki. Access by car is very convenient. If traveling by public transport, the most common route is taking a taxi from Ishioka Station on the Joban Line.
Because the park is so large, you will likely be walking long distances; we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While there are rest areas and facilities within the park, please bring items to prepare for changing weather. Payments can be made at various facilities and shops within the park.
