Located near the southern tip of Hyuga Misaki, "Umagase" is a representative scenic spot of the Nichi-hyo Kaigan Quasi-National Park. The most striking feature is the 70-meter high cliff face, etched with regular, rhythmic patterns known as columnar joints. This geological formation was created by submarine volcanic activity approximately 15 million years ago, offering an overwhelming view of nature's power. The name "Umagase" (Horse's Back) comes from the way the rock face resembles a horse's back when viewed from the sea.
This site holds immense geological value. The rocks composing the cliff are primarily volcanic tuff, where the cooling and contraction of flowing lava during volcanic activity created these distinct rectangular or hexagonal cracks (columnar joints). In recognition of its unique landscape and academic significance, the area was designated as a National Natural Monument on February 13, 2018. For generations, it has been cherished by locals and visitors alike as a symbol of nature's sculptural beauty.
The highlight of your visit is the observation deck located at the end of the well-maintained walking path. From here, you can see the unobstructed horizon of the Pacific Ocean and the massive cliff looming directly in front of you. The intricate textures of the columnar joints and the complex coastal topography carved by waves tell a story of long-term natural erosion. Nearby, you can also experience the beautiful coastal landscape of "Krusu no Umi," a sea shaped by fault lines, which is said to grant wishes.
The scenery around Hyuga Misaki changes beautifully with the seasons. On clear days, the contrast between the deep blue sea, white sea spray, and the dark rock face is exceptionally vivid. The details of the rock textures are most apparent when the sun is high in the sky. For a more dramatic experience, visit during the evening; the setting sun over the Pacific Ocean casts a golden light upon the cliffs, creating a breathtaking spectacle. The surrounding vegetation, including tropical plants like palms and camellias, adds to the seasonal charm.
The journey to the observation deck is a scenic walk along a maintained path. From the parking lot, it takes about 6–7 minutes to reach the deck, or about 12–13 minutes if coming from the lighthouse route. The primary activity is a peaceful stroll to contemplate the natural formations. Additionally, the surrounding Hyuga City area offers various cultural experiences, such as pottery making, soba noodle making, and traditional tofu making, allowing you to connect deeply with local traditions.
