Hozukyo Gorge is a breathtaking valley stretching approximately 16km from Kameoka City to Ukyo Ward, Kyoto. Characterized by a deep V-shaped canyon formed by river erosion, the area features a dynamic landscape of massive boulders and unique rock formations. Visitors can experience nature intimately through the 'Hozu River Boat Ride,' which lets you feel the power of the current, or the 'Sagano Scenic Railway (Sagano Torokko Train),' which offers a relaxing view of the changing seasons from a vintage train window.
The history of river transport in this area dates back to the early Edo period, when the route was developed by Kadokura Ryoi. While it once served as a vital transport route for goods, it has evolved into a beloved destination for leisure and tourism. The area also preserves deep-rooted local traditions, such as the 'Hozu Fire Festival' held at Kitada Shrine every October 20th, honoring the deity of the Hozu River.
The greatest draw of Hozukyo Gorge is its ever-changing river scenery. During the Hozu River Boat Ride, skilled boatmen navigate through narrow passages between giant rocks, providing an exciting experience where you might even get splashed by the water. The signature activity is the 'Hozu River Boat Ride.' Riding in a shallow-bottomed boat guided by the rhythmic rowing of a boatman allows you to feel the raw energy of the river. For a more relaxed pace, the 'Sagano Scenic Railway' runs between Saga and Kameoka, offering a leisurely way to soak in the canyon views. The area is highly accessible for tourists. The boat boarding point is approximately an 8-minute walk from JR Kameoka Station. You can also access the area via the Sagano Scenic Railway from the Arashiyama direction. For relaxation, you can visit local spots like 'Kotogase Chaya' to rest amidst nature, or enjoy the local footbath areas during your stroll.
When enjoying the Hozu River Boat Ride, we recommend wearing clothes that can get wet and comfortable walking shoes, as you may get splashed by water and the terrain can be uneven.
