Located in Nagatoro, Saitama Prefecture, Hozen-ji Temple is home to two magnificent weeping cherry trees (shidarezakura) that have been designated as local natural monuments. The first is the "Mida no Sakura," standing approximately 16.4m tall in front of the main hall, and the second is the "Yoraku no Jizo Sakura," standing about 12m tall near the temple entrance. Both trees are estimated to be over 100 years old, offering a graceful and ethereal sight during the spring season.
The tree in front of the main hall is named "Mida no Sakura" because the temple's principal deity is Amida Nyorai (Amitābha). The tree at the entrance is called "Yoraku no Jizo Sakura," a name derived from the way its branches once draped over a Jizo statue inscribed with the words "Bakku-yo-raku" (removing suffering and granting joy). These trees were officially designated as town natural monuments on May 24, 1986, representing a deep connection between local history, faith, and nature.
The primary attraction is the two natural monument weeping cherry trees. The tree in front of the main hall is a massive specimen, roughly 16.4m in height, with a canopy spreading 14m east-west and 18m north-south. The second tree near the entrance stands 12m tall with a spread of 13m in both directions. In spring, the delicate pink blossoms cascade toward the ground, creating a classic weeping cherry landscape. Visitors can also appreciate the historical architecture of the temple and the meaningful inscriptions on the Jizo statue.
The peak season is April. Under the bright spring sunlight, the pale pink blossoms create a vivid and serene landscape. Visiting during the daytime is highly recommended to see the full color and detail of the blossoms against the temple backdrop. It is a perfect time to feel the transition of the seasons in a peaceful setting.
The main activity at Hozen-ji is the contemplative appreciation of these natural masterpieces. Because the two trees are located in different spots—one by the main hall and one near the entrance—visitors can enjoy the blossoms from two distinct perspectives. A quiet stroll through the temple grounds allows you to experience the harmonious blend of Japanese traditional architecture and natural beauty.
