The Hotaruika Museum, located in Namikawa, Toyama Prefecture, is an immersive museum centered on the ecology of the firefly squid and the mysteries of Toyama Bay. The facility is famous for its modern, nearly circular architectural design situated along the coast, surrounded by open spaces and water features. The interior is divided into several zones: a Market Hall and Restaurant area offering views of the sea, sky, and the majestic Tateyama Mountain Range, and a specialized Museum Zone featuring enchanting light displays.
This facility has been developed over many years as a hub to share the local culture and natural abundance of Namikawa. The journey began in 1989 with the establishment of the Namikawa City Firefly Squid Tourism Facility Construction Fund, followed by the construction of the 'Hotaruika Observatory' in 1992. The current museum opened in 1998. It serves as a vital cultural center, passing down the legacy of the firefly squid—a symbol of Toyama's rich marine heritage—to future generations.
The museum features numerous exhibits designed to teach visitors about the fascinating biology of the firefly squid. A major highlight is the 'Bioluminescence Live Show' held in the live theater, which showcases the spectacular glowing phenomena of the squid. In the 'Mysterious Deep Sea' section, you can observe creatures from Toyama Bay that are kept in deep-sea water environments. The exhibition areas use sophisticated lighting to recreate the atmosphere of the deep ocean. Additionally, look out for the museum's original mascot characters hidden throughout the exhibits.
The best time to visit is during the firefly squid season from March 20th to late May, when live firefly squid displays and special experiences are at their peak. Please note that admission fees are slightly higher during this peak season. From June to mid-March of the following year, the exhibits shift focus toward other mysteries of the deep sea. During the day, the Market Hall offers a bright, refreshing atmosphere with panoramic views of the ocean and the Tateyama peaks. As evening approaches, the museum's lighting creates a more mystical and ethereal ambiance.
This is more than just a viewing facility; it is a sensory experience. Key activities include watching the bioluminescence shows in the live theater and exploring spaces that replicate the deep-sea environment. The museum also offers a chance to enjoy the stunning coastal scenery. Visitors will gain a deep, visual understanding of the Toyama Bay ecosystem and the unique way firefly squid communicate through light.
The museum is located adjacent to the 'Michi-no-Eki Wave Park Namikawa.' The surrounding area features beautiful coastlines perfect for seaside strolls. At the nearby roadside station (Michi-no-Eki), you can enjoy local specialties, products related to deep-sea water, and various dining options. For a complete maritime tour of Toyama, you can also include other facilities like the Uozu Aquarium in your itinerary.
While the facility is climate-controlled, we recommend comfortable clothing for easy movement through the exhibits. Please respect the exhibits and other visitors by following all posted rules.
