Hotaru Doyo Park is an ideal location for firefly watching, situated in the scenic Matsuo-kyo area of Tatsuno Town, Nagano Prefecture. While the natural environment once supported a thriving population of Genji fireflies, the numbers declined due to environmental changes. However, through the town's proactive conservation efforts—including water purification, the creation of small streams using fallow rice fields, and meticulous waterway maintenance—the area has been successfully revitalized. The park is divided into two main areas: the 'Fureai Zone' (Hirade side) and the 'Small Creatures Zone' (Shimotatsuno side), both offering rich, diverse natural environments.
The natural landscape of Matsuo-kyo was designated as a prefectural natural monument in 1935. During the 1950s and 60s, the area faced challenges such as declining firefly populations due to industrial and domestic water pollution. In response, Tatsuno Town implemented rigorous environmental protection measures, including water-cleaning projects and continuous maintenance like weeding and dredging to ensure a habitat suitable for fireflies. These dedicated efforts have allowed the fireflies to return, establishing the park as a vital 'Home for Local Wildlife.'
The absolute highlight of the park is the spectacular display of dancing fireflies from early to mid-June. The most enchanting sight occurs on warm, humid nights between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM, especially when there is minimal moonlight. Watching the glowing fireflies dance over the carefully maintained streams and natural scenery is a truly unforgettable experience. Additionally, the park features playground equipment, making it a wonderful place for families to enjoy nature together.
