Guide
Hoshigayama Park's 'Satsuki-no-Sato' area is a nature-rich destination situated at an altitude of approximately 450m. Its most iconic feature is the spectacular display of 50,000 Satsuki azaleas that bloom from late May to early June. During this period, visitors can witness a breathtaking contrast between the vast expanse of pink flowers, the deep blue of the Sagmi-nada Sea below, and the beautiful coastline stretching toward the Manazuru Peninsula. The harmony of lush greenery, sea blue, and floral colors offers a serene and peaceful atmosphere.
The area is steeped in local history. The surrounding Nango-yama hiking trails feature several spots related to the legendary Minamoto no Yoritomo. For instance, you can find traces of history such as 'Jikansui' (believed to be a place Yoritomo visited during his retreat) and 'Komichi Jizo' (dedicated to Junkaisho, a benefactor of Yoritomo). This allows visitors to enjoy a walk that is not just a nature excursion, but a journey through regional history.

The highlight of the park is the 'Satsuki Carpet,' a stunning sight where thousands of azaleas bloom in unison. Another unique feature is the 'Yuuo-no-Kane' swing bell. Ringing the bell allows the clear, resonant sound to drift through the air, harmonizing beautifully with the natural surroundings. From the observation deck near the summit, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Sagami-nada Sea, which, on clear days, reveals distant islands on the horizon.
The best time to visit Hoshigayama Park is from late May to early June to see the Satsuki azaleas in full bloom. However, the scenery changes with the seasons; from early October to late December, the surrounding Nango-yama area features vibrant citrus orchards, offering a different kind of natural beauty.
Activities primarily focus on hiking and nature walks. You can explore historical sites while walking the Nango-yama hiking trails. During the azalea blooming season, the 'Satsuki-no-Sato Marche' is often held, where you can discover local treasures such as fresh vegetables, fruits, handmade jams, and local Ashigara tea. It is a perfect way to refresh your mind and body in the fresh mountain air.
The area around the park is filled with spots to experience the natural beauty of Yugawara. The Nango-yama hiking course is accessible via bus from Yugawara Station, and the routes are well-maintained for exploring historical landmarks like Jikansui and Komichi Jizo. The nearby views of the Manazuru Peninsula and Ish岛 (Ishima) islands add to the charm of the coastal scenery.
Since the park is located in a mountainous area, please be aware that it can become windy. We recommend bringing a light jacket or windbreaker and wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you plan to use the hiking trails, sturdy footwear is highly recommended. Please note there is a walk of approximately 300m from the parking area to the main park area, so dress for light physical activity.
