Rinrin-ji is a temple of the Myoshin-ji school of the Rinzai sect, located in Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto. It is widely recognized by its nickname, "Daruma-dera" (Daruma Temple). The most striking feature is the vast number of Daruma dolls enshrined throughout the grounds. In particular, the "Okari-daruma-do" houses a diverse collection of Daruma dolls with various expressions and shapes donated from all over Japan. This site carries a deep historical connection to post-war recovery and prayers for peace, creating a unique atmosphere where traditional Zen architecture meets a whimsical, one-of-a-kind landscape of Daruma dolls.
The history of this temple dates back to 1718, when the money changer Araki Mitsunoshimune began its development with Dai-gu Shuchiku as the founding master. After nine years of construction, it was established in 1727 as Sanzoin Rinrin-ji Temple. A unique aspect of its history is that the founder was a money changer rather than a member of the samurai class. Despite facing several fires over the centuries, the temple has maintained its spiritual presence, such as the construction of the Grand Shoin during the era of the 10th priest, Goto Ishowa. The "Okari-daruma-do" was built in 1945 to pray for post-war reconstruction, cementing its identity as the "Daruma Temple."
There are several unique structures and exhibits that draw visitors to Rinrin-ji. First is the "Daruma-do" (Okari-daruma-do), where you can see thousands of Daruma dolls with countless different expressions. Next is the "Kinema-den," a hall that honors approximately 800 figures from the Japanese film industry, offering a unique cultural perspective. The "Eirei-den" on the second floor of the Shuseido hall serves as a memorial for those lost in the Pacific War, adding historical weight to the site. Additionally, the temple features beautiful Zen architecture, including the Hojo (Main Hall, built in 1718), the "Jugyu-no-niwa" garden representing stages of Zen enlightenment, and the "Mujin-niwa" dry landscape garden.
Rinrin-ji offers different charms depending on the season. November is a particularly recommended time to visit, as the surrounding environment and gardens undergo beautiful seasonal changes. Notably, on November 1st, the "Daruma-ki" (Daruma Memorial) is held, often accompanied by a special Temple Treasure Exhibition (paid). During this time, you can view precious temple treasures that are rarely on display. Visiting during daylight hours allows you to clearly see the vibrant colors of the Daruma dolls, while the quiet afternoon hours are perfect for contemplating the Zen gardens in a peaceful atmosphere.
Visitors primarily enjoy observing the Zen architecture and the unique Daruma-related culture. The "Mujin-niwa" dry landscape garden and the "Jugyu-no-niwa" garden provide opportunities to experience traditional Japanese garden aesthetics. During the Setsubun season, the temple often experiences a lively atmosphere with many visitors. The temple allows you to experience different facets of Japanese history in one place, from the film industry's history at Kinema-den to the spiritual-historical sites of the Zen tradition.
Rinrin-ji is located in a relatively quiet area of Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto, surrounded by residential neighborhoods and historical streets in the Nishikyo area. It is easily accessible via the JR San-in Line (Enmachi Station) or the Hankyu Railway (Saiin Station), making it a great stop while exploring the northwestern part of Kyoto. The surrounding area is characterized by small-scale local temples and a peaceful, local atmosphere.
