Hori Garden (Former Hori Family Garden) is a nationally designated scenic beauty located in Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture. The garden is uniquely characterized by the coexistence of various architectural styles and landscapes from different eras. Within this single estate, you can experience the aesthetic beauty of the Edo-period main house, the Me clearly defined Meiji-period guest house known as 'Rakuzanso', and the Taisho-period 'Warakuen'. It is a sophisticated space where nature and architecture are seamlessly integrated.
The garden developed as the residence of the Hori family. The grounds preserve several important structures, including the Edo-period main house, the Meiji-period guest house 'Rakuzanso', and various storehouses (kura) and gates. These are not merely historical buildings but essential elements that compose the garden's landscape. Details such as the light-providing turret rooms and the diverse designs of the transoms (ranma) showcase the profound historical value and the architectural heritage of the Hori family.
The garden features four distinct garden areas, each offering a different view and historical atmosphere: the Edo-period 'Main Garden', the Meiji-period 'Rakuzanso' garden, the Taisho-period 'Warakuen', and the 'Outer Structure Garden' of the former Hatasako Hospital. From an architectural standpoint, the Sukiya-style 'Rakuzanso' guest house, the rustic storehouses, and the traditional gates add immense depth to the scenery. Observing the subtle differences in architectural details is a unique way to appreciate the passage of time.
The garden's appearance changes beautifully with the seasons. The most spectacular time to visit is from late October to mid-November, when the maple trees and foliage on the surrounding mountains turn vibrant shades of red and orange. During the lush green season, the garden also offers a refreshing atmosphere, and special events like light-ups may occasionally be held.
