Honraku-ji is a Shingon Buddhist temple located in Mima City, Tokushima Prefecture. The temple's landscape is deeply special, having been shaped under the guidance of Chiichi Saito, a disciple of the legendary Japanese garden designer Mirei Shigemori. The most striking feature is the magnificent Karesansui (dry landscape) garden, which utilizes the technique of 'shakkei' (borrowed scenery) to incorporate the Yoshino River into its design. The architecture and gardens are harmoniously integrated with the natural terrain, offering a profound sense of serenity and connection with nature.
While Honraku-ji has roots dating back to the Heian period, much of the current architecture consists of structures rebuilt or renovated in the modern era due to historical natural disasters and conflicts. Despite this, the traditional spirit of the land remains intact. The temple operates under the philosophy of contributing to human happiness and cultural enrichment through its gardens and cuisine. The architectural evolution continues today, with the Amida-do Hall built in 1990, the Goma-do Hall in 1999, and plans for a new bell tower (Shoro-do) in 2024, blending ancient traditions with contemporary preservation.
The temple offers a breathtaking fusion of nature and architecture. Upon passing through the Sanmon (mountain gate), visitors are greeted by the Karesansui garden. The design uses artificial hedges to frame the view, making the distant mountains and the flow of the Yoshino River feel like an integral part of the garden itself. Another highlight is the 'Kake-zukuri' (overhang) style architecture. Buildings such as the Amida-do, Goma-do, and Tenjinja utilize the natural slope of the land, creating a unique structural beauty that draws visitors in. As you wander through the stroll garden, you will experience a mesmerizing blend of human artistry and natural landscape.
Honraku-ji reveals a different face with every season. The changing colors of the garden and the seasonal ingredients used in the temple's cuisine ensure that every visit feels unique. Beyond sightseeing, Honraku-ji offers immersive sensory experiences. In the tea room, you can enjoy authentic matcha and traditional sweets while gazing at the scenery from a breezy, elevated room—a perfect way to escape daily life. For those seeking spiritual focus, the temple also offers Sutra copying (Shakyo) with all necessary tools provided. Additionally, guests can experience traditional Japanese culture through food. Please note that meals such as Shojin Ryori or Shokado Bento require advance reservations.
The temple is situated along the Yoshino River in Mima City. The surrounding area is rich in history, and you can easily combine a visit to Honraku-ji with a trip to the 'Wakamachi Udatsu' historic district, known for its preserved traditional streetscapes. While traveling by car via Route 192 or the Tokushima Expressway is common, please be aware that some local roads in the area can be narrow.
As this is a sacred Buddhist site, please maintain a respectful demeanor. We recommend wearing modest clothing and bringing a pair of socks, as you will frequently be asked to remove your shoes when entering buildings. Please note that most payments (admission, tea, and meals) are strictly CASH ONLY. If you wish to enjoy a meal, advance reservation is mandatory. When photographing the gardens or buildings, please follow local etiquette and respect the tranquility of the temple grounds.
