Honkyo-ji is a Buddhist temple of the Nichiren sect located in the Fushimi Ward of Kyoto City. Its mountain name is Kuon-zan. This area has long been known as the 'Ogurusu Danrin,' a place where many monks gathered to study. Today, the temple offers an incredibly calm and peaceful atmosphere, where visitors can feel the weight of history within its serene surroundings.
The history of Honkyo-ji dates back to 1506 (the 3rd year of the Eisho era), founded by the monk Nichiho, the 11th head of Yoho-ji. During the Edo period, the area served as an educational hub with the establishment of the Ogurusu Danrin, a school for monks. Over the centuries, the temple's form changed due to various historical shifts, including a devastating fire in 1714 and the restructuring of religious institutions during the Meiji era.
A particularly significant aspect of this temple is its connection to one of Japan's most dramatic historical eras. Local legends suggest that this is the site related to the final days of Akechi Mitsuhide, the general famous for the Honno-ji Incident. To honor his memory, a memorial tower stands to the left of the main hall, serving as a poignant cultural landmark that connects visitors to the epic drama of the Sengoku period.
