Honto-ji is the head temple of the Nichiren sect, located in Hiraga, Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture. Often referred to as the "Hydrangea Temple," it is celebrated for its ever-changing gardens and natural landscapes. As a significant center for Nichiren Buddhism, it has long been a place of devotion for the local community and pilgrims. The temple grounds are filled with seasonal blooms, offering a different, beautiful expression depending on when you visit.
As a temple that preserves the traditions of Nichiren Buddhism, Honto-ji has served as a spiritual cornerstone for many years. The temple houses sacred treasures such as the Kaiun Kosiku Nichizo Bosatsu and Daikokufukujoten, with special ceremonies and prayers held for these deities. Visitors come to experience authentic Japanese temple architecture and the profound spiritual culture that has been passed down through generations.

The greatest draw of Honto-ji is its seasonal natural beauty. The temple attracts many visitors during the hydrangea season in early summer and the autumn foliage season. Within the grounds, you can witness various traditional Japanese prayers and rituals firsthand. Additionally, the practice of making requests through wooden tablets (mokubata) and participating in specific prayers for sacred treasures are essential parts of the spiritual experience here.
Honto-ji offers completely different atmospheres depending on the season. From May to June, the hydrangeas (the temple's namesake) are in full bloom. The autumn season is also a spectacular time to visit as the entire area is bathed in vibrant colors. The temple is open from 5:00 to 17:00 (last entry at 16:30). Visiting in the early morning allows you to enjoy the profound silence and serenity of the grounds. Please note that for periods involving paid prayer services, the hours are 9:00 to 16:30.

Visitors can experience traditional Japanese prayers and rituals, ranging from general blessings for family safety, academic success, and traffic safety to special prayers for childbirth and Shichi-Go-San celebrations. The temple also serves as a space for cultural activities such as yoga and calligraphy, providing a unique opportunity to connect with Japanese spirituality and lifestyle in a tranquil environment.
Honto-ji is situated in the Hiraga area of Matsudo, Chiba. The surrounding neighborhood is a peaceful residential area where you can enjoy a relaxing stroll through typical Japanese local scenery. The temple is easily accessible from urban areas, being within walking distance of Kita-Kogane Station on the JR Joban Line.

When visiting a temple, it is customary to wear modest and respectful clothing. As the grounds may have uneven surfaces or gravel paths, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please note that cash is required for purchasing wooden tablets or participating in certain prayers. English language support is limited, so checking information in advance is helpful. When photographing, please respect the temple rules, as photography is often restricted during active ceremonies or prayers.
