Hōmei Shijuhatchitaki is a scenic natural landmark in Aoba Ward, Sendai, featuring a series of cascading waterfalls of various sizes. Located near the Seiko Bridge along Route 48 in the upper reaches of the Hirose River, the site is famous for its unique name. The name 'Hōmei' refers to the beautiful, rhythmic sound of the water, which is said to resemble the cry of the legendary phoenix. The sight of numerous waterfalls flowing down stone steps through lush forests is a masterpiece of natural art.
This area was once known as 'Bomeki no Taki.' The name 'Shijuhatchitaki' (Forty-eight Waterfalls) has been used since the Edo period, referring to the total number of falls including the upper tributaries. Local legends even tell of a celestial maiden descending to perform a dance here, adding a layer of mystical history to the landscape. In more recent times, the melodic sound of the falls has been poetically compared to the call of a phoenix, giving rise to its current name.
The most spectacular view is from the high-altitude observation deck overlooking the upper Hirose River. From this vantage point, you can witness the breathtaking sight of multiple waterfalls cascading one after another. With a drop of approximately 25 meters and a width of about 10 meters, the contrast between the white, rushing water and the surrounding greenery or autumn colors is truly striking. Each visit offers a new perspective as the landscape shifts with the seasons.
The scenery changes dramatically throughout the year. From early summer to summer, the vibrant green foliage and white water spray create a refreshing, cool atmosphere. In autumn, the surrounding trees turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red, creating a poetic landscape where the colorful leaves reflect on the water's surface. For the best photography, visiting during bright daylight hours will allow you to capture the clarity of the water and the dynamic movement of the falls.
Visitors can enjoy nature walks, light hiking, and photography. The walking paths allow you to feel the power of the water and the sounds of nature up close. The observation decks provide a perfect spot to observe the dynamic movement of the cascading falls. It is an ideal environment for quiet contemplation and observing the changing seasons. The nearby hot spring area also makes it a great destination for relaxation after a walk.
The area around Hōmei Shijuhatchitaki offers several great sightseeing opportunities. You can easily combine a visit with a soak in the nearby Sakunami Onsen. Additionally, the Nikka Whisky Miyagikyo Distillery is located nearby, allowing you to create a wonderful itinerary that blends natural beauty with industrial culture.
As this is a natural riverside area, we highly recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes or trekking shoes, as paths can be slippery and involve stairs. Please prepare Japanese Yen (cash) for local transportation or nearby facilities. English support is limited in the natural area, so please be prepared. No reservations are required, but please be mindful of weather conditions and water levels. Please respect the environment and carry your trash with you. Note that the natural terrain includes steps and slopes, making some routes difficult for wheelchair users.
