Hokuryu Sunflower Village is a vast sunflower field spanning approximately 23 hectares in Hokuryu, Hokkaido. Here, about 2 million sunflowers bloom beautifully along the eastern-facing slopes. The most striking feature is that the sunflowers face the visitors, creating an immersive experience. This golden landscape, glowing under the sunlight, is renowned as one of Japan's most spectacular views. As the official "Town Flower" of Hokuryu, these sunflowers are a symbol of local pride and vitality, providing visitors with an uplifting sense of energy.
The sunflower is deeply loved by the local community and serves as the official flower of Hokuryu. Since the development of this massive field began in 1989, it has been carefully nurtured by the townspeople. Despite being a small town of only about 1,750 residents, the community's dedication to promoting the area through its sunflowers is a source of great pride. The annual "Sunflower Festival" is a vital cultural event that strengthens community bonds, making this more than just a tourist destination—it is a place where the soul of the town resides.
The greatest draw is the sea of sunflowers that reaches its peak in early August. Because the hills face east, the sunflowers receive direct sunlight in the morning, making the vibrant yellow hues even more brilliant. The park also features two "Sunflower Mazes" for an adventurous exploration through the blossoms. Additionally, there are several family-friendly activities, such as sightseeing bus tours around the grounds and the nearby Aigamo (Muscovy duck) farm, where you can enjoy the rich natural environment.
The best time to visit is from late July to mid-August. Early August is particularly recommended, as many sections reach full bloom, offering the most magnificent scenery. For the best photography, visit in the morning when the sun rises in the east; the light hitting the flowers makes the colors appear exceptionally vivid. Please note that visiting in winter is difficult due to heavy snowfall, so plan your trip during the summer season.
To enjoy the vast landscape, you can take a sightseeing bus tour, which offers a different perspective of the sunflower fields compared to walking. You can also enjoy exploring the sunflower mazes or observing nature at the Aigamo farm. During the Sunflower Festival, the experience is even more special with seasonal programs such as song shows, fireworks displays, and events featuring local specialty products.
Near the entrance, the "Sunflower Tourism Center" serves as a great base for rest. Here, you can purchase local souvenirs and enjoy snacks like soft-serve ice cream. The surrounding area is also dotted with various agricultural experiences and spots where you can feel the rich, natural essence of Hokkaido.
As you will be walking outdoors in the summer heat for extended periods, it is highly recommended to bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. Wear comfortable, breathable clothing and sturdy walking shoes (such as sneakers), as some areas may be unpaved. Please be mindful of the flowers and avoid touching them excessively to preserve their beauty. Note that parking requires payment via a specialized machine.
