The Hokkaido Prefectural Obihiro Museum is a distinguished art institution located within Midorigaoka Park in Obihiro City, Hokkaido. Since its opening in 1991, the museum has served as a vital cultural hub for the region. Its collection is uniquely characterized by works from artists associated with Eastern Hokkaido, a sophisticated range of modern and contemporary print art, and Western artworks centered on the Barbizon school, which beautifully depict pastoral landscapes and rural life.
The museum's main building was completed in March 1991 following a competitive architectural design process held in 1988. The building's design is highly regarded, having received the 17th Hokkaido Architecture Award from the Architectural Institute of Japan in 1992. Since its inception, the museum has been supported by the volunteer group "Shirakaba-no-kai." Having welcomed over 2 million visitors, it remains a cornerstone of local culture and artistic appreciation.
The exhibition facilities consist of a Main Exhibition Room (841.9 m²) and a Collection Gallery (209.5 m²). The collection features works by artists with deep ties to Eastern Hokkaido, alongside modern print art and Western Barbizon school paintings. These pieces often focus on themes of natural landscapes and rural scenery, creating a profound connection between the art and the surrounding environment.
The museum is open from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Please note that the final entry to the exhibition rooms is at 4:30 PM. The museum is closed on Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a public holiday) and during the New Year holidays. Visitors can enjoy the exhibitions in a serene environment within the park's cultural zone throughout the seasons.
