Hofukuji (Hofukuji-ji) is a Rinzai Zen temple of the Tofuku-ji school, located in Ijiri, Soja City, Okayama Prefecture. Known by its mountain name "Iyama," the temple is home to numerous historical buildings and cultural assets. The most striking feature is the three-story pagoda, a designated National Important Cultural Property, whose majestic presence captivates all who visit. Furthermore, the temple is renowned as a place where the famous Muromachi-period painter Sesshu practiced his training, offering visitors a profound connection to Japanese spiritual culture and art history.
While the origins of the temple are said to trace back to a monk of the Tendai sect, it is currently operated as a temple of the Rinzai Zen school. At one point in its history, it was a significant center with many sub-temples and branch temples, playing a vital role in the local community. Although many structures were lost to the fires of the Sengoku-period Bitchu wars, the temple underwent a major reconstruction during the Edo period. This led to the establishment of the current temple layout, including the Buddha Hall and Zen Hall, which showcase classic Zen-style architecture. The greatest attraction is the three-story pagoda, a National Important Cultural Property. Extensive research confirms its architecture dates back to the Nanboku-cho period. The temple grounds also feature several Registered Tangible Cultural Properties, including the Hojo (Abbot's Quarters), Buddha Hall, Bell Tower, Zen Hall, and Sanmon (Mountain Gate), which preserve architectural styles spanning from the Edo to the Meiji periods. Other significant assets include the temple bell, a designated Important Cultural Property of Okayama Prefecture, and various historical documents. Visitors can also explore the local legends of Sesshu, such as the story of "Sesshu's Mouse," adding a layer of narrative to the historical landscape.
