Hitoyoshi Onsen is a historic hot spring area located in the upper reaches of the Kuma River in Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture. With a history spanning approximately 500 years, this region is also registered as a Japan Heritage site, characterized by a charming hot spring town that harmonizes beautifully with the abundant nature of the Kuma River. The primary water types are mild alkaline simple springs and sodium bicarbonate springs, known for being colorless, transparent, and gentle on the skin. The area features numerous public bathhouses (kyodo-yoku), traditional inns (ryokan), and day-trip bathing facilities that warmly welcome visitors.
