Hitachi Fudoki no Oka is a historical and cultural park located in Ishioka City, Ibaraki Prefecture. This region is a treasure trove of history, featuring diverse archaeological sites spanning from the Paleolithic and Jomon periods through the Yayoi period, up to the Kofun period (4th to 6th centuries). Within the park, visitors can witness the physical remnants of ancient Japanese history, such as kofun (burial mounds), alongside traditional architectural styles and a rich, natural environment.
The area surrounding Ishioka City has been a significant historical center for centuries. The region is home to numerous important archaeological sites, including the Funatsukayama Kofun and the Fuchu Aito-yama Kofun, which serve as evidence of the powerful ancient clans that once ruled this land. By the mid-7th century, the Hitachi Province was established, and the area served as a political and cultural hub with the establishment of a Kokuga (provincial government office) and various temples. This deep historical foundation defines the character of Hitachi Fudi no Oka today.
