Hiroshima City Botanical Garden is a sprawling urban park located in Kurashige, Saeki-ku, Hiroshima City. Covering an impressive 18.3 hectares, the park serves as a green sanctuary for the city. The centerpiece of the garden is its iconic Grand Conservatory, which houses a stunning variety of flora, including cacti, tropical water lilies, and begonias. The park is well-equipped with facilities such as a botanical exhibition museum and wide-open lawn areas, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers.
The park was established as a facility dedicated to the research and exhibition of botanical life. It officially opened on November 3, 1976. While the area was formerly part of Itsukaichi Town in Saeki District, it became part of Hiroshima City following the municipal mergers in 1985. Today, the park is managed and operated by the Hiroshima City Greenery and Living Things Association under a designated manager system, ensuring the preservation of its diverse plant collections.
Visitors can explore various specialized greenhouses that showcase a wide array of plant life, such as cacti, tropical water lilies, and begonias. The Grand Conservatory stands as the park's most significant landmark and a must-see for any visitor. Additionally, the botanical exhibition museum offers educational insights into plant life, while the expansive lawn areas provide a peaceful space for visitors to enjoy the greenery.
The garden offers a changing landscape of botanical displays throughout the seasons. The park is open from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with the final entry allowed at 4:00 PM. Depending on the time of year and the specific microclimates within the greenhouses, you can witness the unique beauty of different plant species in bloom.
With its spacious lawn areas, the garden is an ideal spot to relax and immerse yourself in a natural environment. Visitors can engage with nature through the educational exhibits at the botanical museum, providing a deeper understanding of plant research and biodiversity in a serene setting.
To reach the garden via public transport, take a bus from JR Itsukaichi Station (JR Sanyo Main Line) and disembark at the 'Shokubutsu Koen' (Botanical Garden) bus stop. If traveling by car, the garden is approximately a 15-minute drive from either the Itsukaichi IC or the Hatsukaichi IC on the Sanyo Expressway. Access is also available via buses from Hiroshima Bus Center.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes as you will be exploring the large grounds. Please note that the park is closed every Friday, during the New Year holidays, and on August 6th (the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Day). If a Friday coincides with a national holiday or August 6th, the preceding day will be observed as the closing day. Please plan your visit accordingly to ensure a smooth experience.
