Hirosaki Park is a sprawling park covering approximately 492,000 square meters in the heart of Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. The site is built upon the former grounds of Hirosaki Castle, the ancestral home of the Tsugaru clan. The park preserves significant historical remains, including a three-story castle keep built during the Edo period, as well as various gates, turrets, stone walls, and moats. These structures are among a rare few in Japan that still retain much of their original appearance. Visitors flock to the area to witness the dramatic shifts in scenery, from the vibrant cherry blossoms in spring to the brilliant autumn colors and the magical snow lantern displays in winter.
Hirosaki Castle was established in 1603 upon selecting its current location. Originally known as "Takaoka," the area was later renamed "Hirosaki." The castle complex was designed with a sophisticated defense system known as "Sogamae," where the entire castle town functioned as a single fortified unit, protected by multiple enclosures (kuruwa), water moats, and dry moats. While the original keep was lost to a lightning strike fire in 1627, the current structure, including the Tatsumi Turret, was reconstructed with official permission. In 1895, following the Meiji Restoration, the grounds were opened to the public as a park.
The park is home to numerous historical structures. The centerpiece is the three-story castle keep, surrounded by various turrets such as the Tatsumi, Miura, and Ushitora turrets, as well as the Ote Gate, Higashi Gate, and Naniemon Gate. The water moats, stone walls, and bridges are also essential parts of the historical landscape. In spring, the park is blanketed in cherry blossoms, while autumn brings deep red foliage that colors the castle walls and moat. Additionally, the Hirosaki Castle Historical Museum is located within the castle grounds.

Note: Access to certain areas, such as the Honmaru and Kita-no-kuruwa enclosures, may require an admission fee between April 1st and November 23rd. The Botanical Garden is open from mid-April to November 23rd.
Various seasonal events take place throughout the year, allowing visitors to experience the changing seasons firsthand. During festival periods, sightseeing boats may operate on the central moat, offering a unique perspective of the historical architecture from the water.
The area surrounding the park is rich in cultural and historical facilities. Within the park, you can visit the Hirosaki Castle Botanical Garden and the Hirosaki Castle Historical Museum. Nearby, the Hirosaki City Museum offers further opportunities to deepen your understanding of the region's history.
