Hirizo-hama is an exquisitely beautiful coast located near the settlement of Nakagi in Minami-Izu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture. Often referred to as the "last hidden gem of Izu," the area is characterized by a unique topography surrounded by steep cliffs. The most defining feature is its isolation; there is no land access, meaning you can only reach this paradise via a boat. This secluded environment has preserved an incredibly high level of water clarity and a rich natural ecosystem. The water is so clear that you can easily see the seabed even at depths of 5 meters or more, offering a stunning gradient of colors from emerald green to deep sapphire blue, reminiscent of a tropical luxury resort.
Historically, this area was known as "Hiiri-doma," a name derived from the beautiful sight of the sun setting within a natural stone arch. While the name "Hirizo-hama" is now the standard, the historical name reflects the long-standing local appreciation for its natural architectural beauty. The Nakagi area has a long history of thriving fishing-based culture, including the harvesting of spiny lobsters, abalone, and turban shells. The natural environment that supported these traditions is still carefully protected today.
The greatest draw of Hirizo-hama is snorkeling and diving in its ultra-transparent waters. A diverse array of marine life inhabits the seabed, providing a spectacular underwater spectacle. Visitors can also enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding cliffs and the scattered islands. A must-see viewpoint is Ai-ai Misaki (Ai-ai Cape), which offers a breathtaking vista of the coastline. Underwater, you can observe various tropical fish and seasonal marine creatures. Because of the exceptional visibility, swimming here feels like being inside a massive, natural aquarium.
The ideal time to visit Hirizo-hama is during the summer months (approximately July to September). During this period, the area opens as a beach destination, and boat services operate from Nakagi Port to reach the shore. Outside of this season, access is restricted due to the lack of land routes. For the best experience, visit during midday when the sun is directly overhead; the sunlight penetrating the water maximizes clarity and brings out the most brilliant colors of the sea.
The primary activities here are snorkeling and diving. You will travel via a small ferry or boat from Nakagi Port to experience this hidden world. The seafloor features diverse topography with many rocks and reefs to explore. Additionally, you can enjoy the scenic beauty of the region via sightseeing-style cruises, such as the Irozaki Cape tours, to view the coastline from the sea.
Near Hirizo-hama, you can visit Ai-ai Misaki for stunning views or Yusuge Park for a relaxing stroll. The gateway to the beach is Nakagi Port, a charming fishing village where you can find local minshuku (guesthouses) and experience a quiet, traditional seaside atmosphere. The area also provides access to the Irozaki region, known for its dramatic and dynamic coastal landscapes at the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula.
Since access requires a boat, it is crucial to check the boat schedule in advance. Please bring swimwear, sandals, and clothing that can easily get wet. If you plan to snorkel, ensure you have your own mask, fins, and snorkel gear. As most local services and boat fees are handled in cash, we strongly recommend bringing enough Japanese Yen. As this is a precious natural environment, please follow the rule of taking all your trash back with you and respect the local ecosystem.
