Hiyama Beach is a stunning destination located in the Taisei district of Setana Town, Hokkaido. It is renowned for its incredible water clarity, having achieved the highest 'AA' rating in the Ministry of the Environment's water quality survey—a distinction that highlights its exceptional purity. The coastline features a gentle, shallow slope and calm waves, making it a perfect environment for families with small children or travelers seeking a relaxing time by the sea. On a clear day, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Okushiri Island appearing on the horizon, offering an expansive and refreshing landscape unique to the west coast of Hokkaido.
This region has a long history of living in harmony with its rich natural surroundings. The area around Hiyama Beach has been carefully preserved to maintain its pristine environment, serving as one of Japan's beautiful coastlines. The presence of facilities like the 'Michi-no-Eki Tekki Land Taisei' (Roadside Station) nearby has helped establish the area as a hub for tourism and leisure that celebrates and utilizes local natural resources.
The greatest draw is undoubtedly the water's transparency. Thanks to the AA-rated water quality, you can swim in exceptionally clear waters or enjoy a peaceful stroll along the shore. The shallow sandy beach is also a popular spot for children to engage in 'treasure hunting,' searching for seashells and small sea creatures. For those looking to unwind, the unobstructed view of the ocean and the distant silhouette of Okoshi Island provide a perfect setting for relaxation.
The beach is typically open during the summer season, from mid-July to mid-August. The morning hours are highly recommended, as the sea is often very calm and the sunlight reflecting off the clear water creates a sparkling, beautiful scenery. In the afternoon, the sun can become quite intense; it is advisable to use sun protection and take breaks in the shade or at the nearby roadside station. Please note that if bad weather or high waves occur, swimming may be prohibited (indicated by a red flag) for safety—always follow local instructions.
Visitors can enjoy swimming in the ocean or various recreational activities along the shoreline. The shallow terrain is perfect for nature observation, such as using buckets or nets to look for shells and small sea creatures. The area is also popular with campers; you can plan an outdoor adventure by combining a beach visit with the nearby 'Taisei Campground.' Please note that professional marine sports facilities (such as surfing or diving rentals) are currently not available on-site.
Directly in front of the beach is 'Michi-no-Eki Tekki Land Taisei,' which provides convenient access to essential facilities such as parking, restrooms, and showers. For those wishing to stay overnight, the nearby 'Taisei Campground' offers a great way to experience life by the sea. The surrounding area is also a beautiful scenic route, perfect for a coastal drive.
To enjoy the beach, please bring a swimsuit, sandals, towels, sunscreen, and a hat. If you plan to use the showers at the roadside station (fee required), remember to bring change of clothes and toiletries. Regarding payments, most services such as tent rentals, showers, and parking are primarily cash-based, so please ensure you carry enough cash. Finally, please respect the environment by taking all your trash home with you and following all local rules to protect the natural scenery.
