Hirado Castle is a historic fortress built on a high hill overlooking the sea in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Construction began in 1599 by Matsuura Shigenobu, but the original structure was destroyed by fire just before completion. The castle was later rebuilt between 1704 and 1707 by Matsuura Tō, the 5th lord of the Matsuura Clan. While the current castle keep and turrets are reconstructions, they faithfully preserve the historical atmosphere. A significant feature is the use of the "Yamaga-ryu" fortification style, based on the theories of the military scholar Yamaga Sōkō, making it one of the few remaining sites in Japan to showcase this rare architectural design.
The history of Hirado Castle is deeply intertwined with the turbulent eras of the Sengoku and Edo periods. The original Hinotake Castle, the seat of the Matsuura clan, holds a unique history as it was burned down by its own inhabitants to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The subsequent reconstruction in the mid-Edo period reflected strategic military needs for guarding the East China Sea. The design utilizes the Yamaga-ryu technique, a rare architectural style shared with only a few other sites like Akō Castle. Today, it serves as a vital center for preserving and sharing local history and culture.
The main attractions of Hirado Castle are the castle keep (tenshu), the turrets (yagura), and the stone walls. From the 5th floor of the castle keep, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the Hirado Strait and Hirado Port. Inside the keep, visitors can explore various exhibits; occasionally, special photo spots, such as those for the "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba" Mugen Castle arc, are set up. The grounds also feature turrets like the "Inui-yagura" and "Kaiju-yagura." The stone walls are particularly noteworthy, showcasing a transition in construction techniques from the rugged "no-zura-zumi" (natural stone stacking) to the more refined "kirikomi-zumi" (precision-cut stone) methods.
Hirado Castle offers different charms depending on the season. In spring (late March to mid-April), the "Hirado Castle Sakura Festival" is held, painting the castle in beautiful shades of pink. During certain periods, the "Hirado Night Museum" events may also occur, allowing you to see the illuminated castle at night. While the daytime offers spectacular sea views from the keep, the evening provides a magical atmosphere with the historic structures lit up against the dark sky.
Beyond exploring the historical structures, visitors can relax at the cafe located on the first floor of the Inui-yagura turret. The cafe serves menus featuring local Hirado ingredients and the famous Nagasaki milkshakes (please note that operating days and hours vary, so it is recommended to check in advance). Additionally, the area occasionally hosts community events like the "Kids Job Challenge." Inside the castle keep, you can gain a deeper understanding of Japanese fortification-building through various educational displays.
Several historical and cultural sites are located near Hirado Castle. Within walking distance, you can visit the Matsuura Historical Museum to deepen your knowledge of the region. To the north of the castle lies Hirado Port, offering beautiful seaside views. The surrounding townscape retains the atmosphere of the former Hirado Clan domain, and exploring the neighborhood via rental bicycle is a highly recommended way to experience the local charm.
