Hinoyama Park is a municipal park located on Mount Hinoyama in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Situated within the Setonaikai National Park (Kanmon Strait area), it is famous for its vast, sweeping views of the Kanmon Strait, Shimonoseki cityscape, and the Sea of Japan. The park is divided into two main areas: the 'Summit Park' at the top and the 'Foot-of-the-Mountain Park' at the base, which features beautiful tulip gardens. The night views here are highly acclaimed and have been officially registered as a 'Japan Night View Heritage' site. Visitors can enjoy a dynamic landscape where seasonal flowers meet the dramatic scenery of the strait.
The area is steeped in local history. Near the summit, you can find the remains of the 'Hinoyama Battery,' a historical site related to the Shimonoseki Fortifications. Since 1958, the Hinoyama Ropeway has been a popular way for tourists to reach the top. Currently, the area is undergoing revitalization and modernization. Plans are underway for new facilities, including a transition from the old observatory to more modern spaces and the potential introduction of a pulse gondola (fixed-circuit gondola) to enhance the visitor experience for future generations.
The park offers a wide variety of things to see. At the Summit Park, a 360-degree panoramic view unfolds; on clear days, you can spot ships crossing the Kanmon Strait and even distant landmarks. The Hinoyama Battery ruins serve as an important site for learning about the region's military history. At the Foot-of-the-Mountain Park, the landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. In May, the area becomes particularly vibrant with the blooming of Turkish tulips and azaleas, creating a stunning fusion of natural colors and topography that is unique to this region.
Each season offers a different charm. Spring (April to May) is the peak season for visitors wanting to see the colorful tulips and azaleas in full bloom. Summer and autumn offer a striking contrast between the blue sea and the sky. For the most spectacular experience, we recommend visiting around sunset. The Kanmon Strait nightscape, a registered 'Japan Night View Heritage' site, features the glittering lights of the city floating against the dark sea. Please note that since the ropeway is currently undergoing maintenance/updates, it is essential to check the operational status before your visit.
Activities at Hinoyama Park primarily focus on nature walks and sightseeing. You can stroll through the well-maintained paths of both the Summit and Foot-of-the-Mountain parks to observe seasonal flora. While the ropeway is currently being updated, the park is preparing for a new era of sightseeing with the planned introduction of a pulse gondola. Exploring the historical battery ruins also provides a unique way to connect with the local history. It is a versatile destination for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and photographers alike.
The park is surrounded by several historical and convenient locations. The nearby Dan-no-ura area is famous as the setting for legendary historical battles, making it a perfect addition to your travel itinerary. For those driving, access is very easy via the Shimonoseki IC on the Chugoku Expressway, which leads to the scenic Hinoyama Parkway. The drive itself offers a wonderful way to enjoy the dynamic scenery of the strait before reaching the park.
As the park includes sloping areas and outdoor walking paths, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please dress according to the season. For payments, such as parking fees, please carry cash as some facilities may not accept cards. Crucially, as the ropeway is currently in a period of replacement/update, please verify the current access methods to the summit before arriving. While general photography is permitted and encouraged, please be mindful of nature and respect the historical sites. Regarding accessibility, while there are wheelchair-accessible parking spaces and entrances, some parts of the park may have uneven terrain or steps.
