The Hinokinai River Embankment (Hinokinai-gawa Tei) is a nationally designated scenic spot located in Semboku, Akita Prefecture. This beautiful path features a line of Somei Yoshino cherry trees along the left bank of the Hinokinai River, stretching approximately 1,950 meters and featuring 409 trees in total. During spring, the blossoms create a magnificent canopy that seems to flow with the river. Recognized as one of the "Japan 100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots," it is a premier destination for cherry blossom viewing in the Tohoku region.
The history of this cherry blossom path dates back to 1934. To celebrate the birth of the then Emperor and the completion of the Hinokinai River embankment, local volunteers and students planted the original Somei Yoshino saplings. In 1948, a grand viewing event helped popularize the area's nickname, the "Tunnel of Flowers." On February 18, 1975, the area was officially designated as a National Scenic Spot. To preserve the beauty of the site, local residents and the city of Semboku continuously perform maintenance, including pruning, pest control, and fertilization to protect trees that are over 90 years old.
The most striking feature is the roughly 2-kilometer-long path of Somei Yoshino cherry trees. When in full bloom, the branches arch overhead to form a spectacular "flower tunnel." The way the blossoms harmonize with the flowing river is a unique characteristic of this location. The historical significance of the site and the sight of the well-maintained, ancient trees are also essential parts of the experience.
The ideal time to visit is during the peak bloom of the Somei Yoshino, typically in April. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to clearly see the delicate white and pale pink hues of the blossoms. Please keep in mind that as this is a natural landscape, the scenery can change significantly depending on the weather and the specific day of the season.
Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the walking paths beside the river, observing the changing seasons through the beauty of nature. This visit is often combined with a tour of the nearby Kakunodate area, where you can explore historical buildings such as the Samurai residences (Bukeyashiki) to experience the local culture and scenery.
Near the Hinokinai River Embankment, you will find the famous "Kakunodate Samurai Residence Street." This area is known for its beautiful weeping cherry trees (Shidarezakura), which offer a different type of beauty compared to the Somei Yoshino at the river. The area also provides excellent access to other sightseeing spots within Semboku and toward Lake Tazawa.
For walking along the riverbank, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Since you will be in a natural setting, it is wise to dress according to the weather. While the area is open to the public, please be mindful of local etiquette. If you use nearby facilities or transportation, you may need cash or a transportation IC card. Please respect the natural environment by taking your trash home and avoiding any damage to the plants.
