Located in Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture, Oshima Hiko Shrine hosts its most significant annual ritual, the 'Reisai' (Annual Festival), every November 1st. The centerpiece of this celebration is the 'Hinoki no Shishi-mai.' This lion dance, also known as 'Meoto Shishi' (the Married Couple Lions), features two lions dancing in perfect synchronization to the rhythmic beats of drums and wooden clappers. The performers, dressed in vibrant, traditional attire, deliver a powerful and high-energy performance that captivates all onlookers.

History & Cultural Background

Oshima Hiko Shrine has long been a site of deep devotion as the head shrine of the Awa Province. The primary deity, Oshima Hiko-no-kami, is believed to be the god who pioneered the Awa region. Additionally, the shrine enshrines Sarutahiko Okami, the deity who served as a guide during the descent of the heavenly gods, making him a protector against misfortune and a guardian of safe travel. The Hinoki no Shishi-mai is performed as a sacred part of these rituals to pray for bountiful harvests and the safety of families.

Main Attractions

The greatest draw is the dynamic movement of the two lions. Performers wear striking traditional costumes in colors like red, gold, and black, topped with large, imposing lion masks. The sight of the colorful, gold-dotted fabrics fluttering with every vigorous movement is visually stunning. Notably, the 3:00 PM performance takes place near the Grand Torii gate, approximately 1 km away from the main shrine grounds, allowing visitors to experience the festival energy from a different perspective.

Best Time to Visit

This event is held only once a year on November 1st during specific time slots. The schedule is as follows: 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 3:00 PM. The 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM performances are held near the main shrine grounds, while the 3:00 PM performance moves to the area around the Grand Torii gate (approx. 1 km away). Planning your visit around the crisp autumn air of November will ensure the best experience.

Activities & Experience

Spectators can watch the lions dance up close, accompanied by the resonant sounds of drums and wooden clappers. From 2:00 PM, you can also witness the procession of Shinto priests carrying portable shrines (Mikoshi) along the sacred path. Oshima Hiko Shrine is nestled in the natural beauty of Naruto City. The shrine grounds feature a massive, sacred Kusunoki (Camphor tree) standing 22 meters tall with a trunk circumference of 8.3 meters, making it a wonderful spot to feel the presence of nature. The grand, vermilion-colored Torii gate, standing about 14.6 meters high, is also a popular photo spot. The surrounding area is perfect for driving and exploring the scenic landscapes of Naruto.
