Nihara Limestone Caves, located in Nihara, Okutama, Tokyo, is a designated natural monument of Tokyo. The cave system spans a total length of 1,270 meters with a vertical drop of 134 meters, making it one of the largest in the Kanto region. Formed by the erosion of limestone along the steep valleys of the Ogawayani stream, the cave offers a unique environment. The temperature remains constant at approximately 11°C (52°F) throughout the year, making it exceptionally cool in the summer and relatively mild in the winter.
This area has a rich history as a center for mountain worship. Today, it serves as a central attraction for tourism in the Nihara area. The growth of limestone formations is incredibly slow; for instance, it takes about 200 years for a stalactite to grow 3 cm, and roughly 400 years for a stalagmite to form. These geological features are precious natural heritages that tell the story of Earth's long history.
