Hinojuku Honjin is a precious historical site located in Hino City, Tokyo, that preserves the architectural style of a 'Honjin' from the Edo-period post towns. A 'Honjin' was a high-ranking lodging facility used by daimyo (feudal lords) and important officials traveling along major highways. As the only surviving Honjin architecture in all of Tokyo, this building holds immense historical value and is officially designated as a Tokyo City Historical Site. The site offers a serene atmosphere that vividly captures the culture of the ancient highway systems.
The history of this site is deeply intertwined with Hino-juku, a post town established along the Koshu Kaido highway in 1605 (the early Edo period). This specific building is recognized as the former residence of Hiko Goro Sato, a prominent local leader. The site is particularly famous as the place where major Shinsengumi figures, including the commander Kondo Isami and the vice-commander Hijikata Toshizo, practiced the Tennen Rishin-ryu school of swordsmanship. The historical connection to these legendary figures, who trained and met in this very area, provides a profound window into the end of the Edo period and the turbulent Bakumatsu era.
