Hinagu Onsen is a historic hot spring district located in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Legend says this spring was discovered in 1409. The water is a mild alkaline simple spring, characterized by its exceptionally soft and gentle texture. The hot spring town, sprawling along the coast of the Shiranui Sea, is filled with wooden buildings and narrow alleys that preserve the nostalgic atmosphere of a bygone era. It offers a special stay where nature, history, and abundant seafood seamlessly converge.
The history of this spring dates back to 1409 (Oei 16). According to legend, a man named Rokuro Hamada prayed for his father's recovery from illness, and through a divine revelation, discovered the hot spring. During the Edo period, it was designated as a domain-managed hot spring for the Hosokawa clan of the Kumamoto Domain. It was famously used by the lords and the Shimadzu clan during their travels, and this prestigious background gives the current streetscape its dignified character. The wandering poet Santoka Taneda also visited this area, leaving behind records of its unique charm.
