Himi Seaside Botanical Garden (also known as Seaside Park) is a specialized botanical garden dedicated to coastal flora, located in Yanagida, Himi City, Toyama Prefecture. Since its opening in 1996, it has showcased the beautiful natural environment of the Noto Peninsula Quasi-National Park facing Toyama Bay. Spanning approximately 6.4 hectares, it is one of the few facilities in Japan focusing on "coastal plants," allowing visitors to enjoy both plant diversity and the scenic coastline simultaneously. In 2021, the garden underwent a significant renewal using local "Himi Sugi" (cedar) to create a space even more deeply connected to the local community.
The area is situated in a scenic spot once praised by the ancient poet Otomo no Yakamochi. Known for its beautiful coastline of white sand and green pines, the natural beauty of the area remains well-preserved. As part of the "Toyama Prefecture Botanical Park Initiative," the garden serves an important educational role in preserving regional natural heritage and passing the knowledge of coastal ecosystems to future generations.
The garden features several distinct areas for exploring different types of vegetation. The "Exhibition Garden" at the center features plants from the surrounding Matsuda-e area and Abuta-jima, showcasing coastal flora from across Japan. In the "Greenhouse," you can encounter exotic tropical and subtropical plants such as Cycads and pineapples. The "Grass Tube" area highlights climbing plants like Bougainvillea. On the seaside, the "Seaside Stroll Garden" allows you to observe plants growing in an environment very close to the actual coastline. Finally, the observation space on the top floor offers a breathtaking, wide-angle view of Toyama Bay.
You can enjoy different botanical expressions throughout the seasons. The period from May to October is particularly vibrant, with lush greenery and strong tropical plant life. During the summer vacation, the garden hosts events like the "Parent-Child Interaction Festival." Visiting during the bright daylight hours is ideal for seeing the vivid colors of the greenhouses and gardens. For a truly luxurious experience, visit in the late afternoon to watch the sunset over the ocean from the observation deck.
The garden offers many educational opportunities to connect with nature. Observing tropical plants in the greenhouse or walking through the coastal paths is enjoyable for both children and adults. The facility also includes a shop, exhibition hall, and workshop space where you can deepen your knowledge through seasonal events. The top-floor observation deck provides a perfect place to relax while enjoying the vast panorama of Toyama Bay.
The garden is adjacent to the Matsuda-e coast within the Noto Peninsula Quasi-National Park, an area rich in natural beauty. The surrounding area features various spots to experience Toyama's rich food culture and restaurants serving fresh seafood. We recommend planning a trip that includes a scenic drive along the coast or a stroll through the nearby natural landscapes.
As the garden covers a large area, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since temperature and humidity change in the greenhouses and exhibition areas depending on the weather, bringing clothing that allows for easy temperature regulation is advised. To protect the delicate ecosystem, touching or removing plants is strictly prohibited. While photography of the scenery is free, please be mindful of any restrictions regarding specific exhibits. For special events or exhibitions, please ensure you have cash on hand for smooth transactions.
