Mt. Himegami is a 1,123.8m mountain located in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. Situated within the Toyama Hayasaka Kogen Prefectural Natural Park, it is part of the Himegami Nature Observation and Education Forest. It is one of the three sacred mountains of Northern Ou (alongside Mt. Iwate and Mt. Hayachine) and is characterized by its gentle, elegant conical shape. Its distinctive silhouette is easily recognizable even from Morioka City, making it a beloved landmark for locals.
Local legends tell of a profound connection between the mountains in this region, where the masculine Mt. Iwate and the feminine Mt. Himegami are said to be a legendary couple. As one of the three sacred mountains of Northern Ou, it has been deeply intertwined with the spiritual and natural history of the area for centuries.
The most striking feature of Mt. Himegami is its perfect conical silhouette and the spectacular 360-degree views from the summit. From the top, you can gaze directly at the majestic Mt. Iwate. Another highlight is the "Ipponsugi" (Single Cedar Tree), located about 10 minutes from the Ipponsugi Trailhead. This massive tree is far larger in diameter and height than the surrounding cedars; it is so grand that it is said four adults could barely embrace it.
The mountain officially opens for the climbing season in mid-May. The period from May to August is ideal for hiking and enjoying the lush greenery. While the trails are generally open year-round, weather conditions can change rapidly, so we recommend checking local conditions before your ascent.
Mt. Himegami offers a variety of hiking and trekking experiences. There are four main climbing routes, each offering different levels of difficulty. The Ipponsugi Trail is a popular choice, taking approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the summit. While there are some steeper sections, the reward is a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape and Mt. Iwate.
The mountain is nestled within the Toyama Hayasaka Kogen Prefectural Natural Park, a region rich in biodiversity and scenic landscapes perfect for nature observation. It is located approximately 25 minutes by car from IGR Shibukuma Station.
Please prepare appropriate hiking boots and clothing. Because some sections of the trail are steep, sturdy footwear with good grip is highly recommended. As mountain weather is unpredictable, carrying rain gear is essential. Please respect the natural environment by following mountain etiquette and carrying all trash back with you.
