Fudekageyama is a mountain rising 311 meters above sea level, located in Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Its name, which means 'Brush Shadow Mountain,' was bestowed by the Edo-period scholar Rai San-yo, as the mountain's silhouette resembles a calligraphy brush when reflected in the sea. As part of the Seto Inland Sea National Park, the summit observatory provides a spectacular vantage point to witness the unique 'archipelago beauty' of the Seto Inland Sea. From this height, visitors can see numerous islands scattered across the water and identify several bridges of the Shimanami Kaido to the southwest, including the view from Mt. Ryuo.
Historically known as 'Hatanoyama,' this area has long been a beloved landmark for local residents. The site is deeply connected to regional history, particularly through its association with the scholar Rai San-yo, who gave the mountain its poetic name. Since 1950, it has been designated as part of the Seto Inland Sea National Park, playing a vital role in both nature conservation and regional tourism.
The summit park offers an expansive panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea. A standout feature is the ability to see the majestic bridges of the Shimanami Kaido (7 out of the 10 total bridges are visible), a view unique to this specific area. The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons: in spring, the area becomes a famous spot for cherry blossom viewing, while in winter, the sight of 'sea fog' (umigiri) creates a mystical, ethereal atmosphere that many travelers seek to experience.
Fudekageyama reveals a completely different face depending on when you visit. In spring (late March to early April), the contrast between the soft pink cherry blossoms and the deep blue sea is breathtaking. Summer and autumn are excellent seasons for hiking and enjoying the lush green nature. In winter, the appearance of sea fog can wrap the entire landscape in a white, dreamlike veil, offering a truly unique photographic opportunity.
The summit area is designed as a park, allowing for easy strolls and light hiking while enjoying the scenery. Because it is easily accessible by car, it is a popular destination for road trips and driving enthusiasts. It is also a highly recommended spot for photography enthusiasts looking to capture the changing colors of the seasons and the vastness of the sea.
Fudekageyama is situated along a major sightseeing route in Mihara City. The 'Michi-no-Eki Mihara Shinmei no Sato' (Roadside Station) is located nearby, serving as a convenient rest stop for drivers. Its proximity to the Shimanami Kaido also makes it an ideal base for travelers exploring the surrounding islands.
While you can drive directly toward the summit area, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for exploring the park grounds. Please prepare clothing suitable for the season; especially during winter or on windy days, bring warm layers to protect against the chill. While the observatory itself is a free public area, if you use nearby facilities or parking areas, please have cash or a credit card ready. English signage and staff support are limited, so it is helpful to have an offline map or navigation app ready. Please respect the natural environment by taking all trash home with you.
