The Hiikawa Riverbank Cherry Blossom Trees are a celebrated scenic spot located in Unnan City, Shimane Prefecture. Recognized as one of the "Top 100 Famous Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan," this area is a premier destination for cherry blossom lovers in the Chugoku region. Approximately 800 Yoshino cherry trees line the 2km stretch of the Hiikawa River, creating a magnificent pink tunnel during the spring season. During peak bloom, the area becomes a lively hub with various food stalls along the riverbank.
The riverbank is situated along the Hiikawa River, a location steeped in local lore, including the famous Yamata no Orochi legend. The cherry blossoms have long been a cherished part of the local landscape, evolving into a symbolic seasonal landmark for the community. The annual blooming period is celebrated as a significant cultural event that brings people together to enjoy the changing seasons.
The most striking feature is the continuous 2km path of cherry blossoms. The density of the 800 Yoshino cherry trees creates an immersive experience where the sky seems to be replaced by a canopy of pink. Visitors can also enjoy the magical atmosphere of the night illuminations, where the trees are softly lit, creating a dreamlike scenery. During the peak season, the presence of food stalls adds a festive, lively energy to the area.
The ideal time to visit is from late March to early April, coinciding with the peak bloom of the Yoshino cherry trees. You can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the blossom tunnel under the daylight or experience the enchanting night views when the trees are illuminated. Walking along the riverbank is the primary activity. During the peak season, the area is filled with food stalls (yatai) where you can sample local flavors and enjoy the festive atmosphere. The site also serves as a beautiful backdrop for photography and seasonal celebrations.
Unnan City offers various other historical and natural sites. Nearby, you can explore the Kamo Iwakura Ruins, visit the historic Mitsuya Shrine, or enjoy outdoor adventures at Forest Adventure Tatara no Sato.
