Higo Hosokawa Gardens is a public park located in the Mejirodai area of Bunkyo, Tokyo. The greatest charm of this location lies in its "stroll-style pond garden" (kaiyu-shiki sen-sui teien), which utilizes the abundant natural spring water of Mejirodai. The design allows visitors to enjoy changing vistas while walking around the perimeter of the pond, perfectly preserving the atmosphere of a grand Edo-period daimyo estate. Even in the heart of Tokyo, you can experience a harmonious space of water and greenery.
The history of this land dates back to the mid-Edo period. Originally the site of a residence for a Shogunate official, it later served as a secondary residence for the Hosokawa family during the late Edo period and as their main residence during the Meiji era. After various changes in ownership, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government purchased the site in 1960, and it opened as a public park the following year. In 1975, management was transferred to Bunkyo City, and it is now maintained as a precious cultural asset that preserves the architectural and landscape traditions of Japan.

The centerpiece of the garden is the stroll-style pond garden. The scenery of the pond, fed by natural spring water, offers a sense of profound tranquility to all who visit. A major highlight is the "Shoseikaku," a significant historic building within the grounds. This two-story wooden structure was built on the site of the former Hosokawa secondary residence during the Meiji era and underwent renovations during the Taisho era. The seamless integration of this historic architecture with the surrounding nature is a sight unique to this garden. Additionally, you can enjoy a relaxing break at the onsite cafe, "Tsubaki," while gazing out at the garden scenery.
You can enjoy the changing beauty of the four seasons here. In spring, enjoy the fresh greenery and blooming flowers; in summer, the refreshing sight of the water's edge; in autumn, the vibrant colors of the changing leaves; and in winter, the serene and quiet atmosphere of the garden. Visiting during the bright daylight hours is ideal for photography, as the colors of the sky and the architecture reflected in the pond are most vivid. The calm atmosphere of the late afternoon is also highly recommended for a peaceful experience.

The primary activity here is a leisurely stroll along the garden's pathways. Because it is a stroll-style garden, your perspective of the scenery changes with every step you take around the pond. It is an ideal destination for those looking to relax in nature or experience traditional Japanese garden aesthetics. Spending a quiet moment at the onsite cafe while watching the garden scenery is another wonderful way to experience the garden's charm.
The Bunkyo area is dotted with facilities and parks that hold significant historical value. Nearby, you can find other local spots like Bunkyo City Edo River Park, which can be incorporated into a walking route. The Mejirodai area is a well-preserved natural environment within the city.

As the garden features unpaved paths and walkways around the pond, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please note the following:
