Hachimaki Observatory is a beautiful night view spot located on the slopes of Mt. Rokko in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, and is associated with Japan's Night View Heritage. Because it is not at an extremely high altitude, it is less susceptible to weather changes compared to higher mountain-top observatories, allowing for a more stable view of the city lights. The proximity to the ports of Rokko Island and Port Island creates a dynamic landscape of light characteristic of a coastal port city.
The area is located along the Omuro Rokko Driveway, which opened in 1929. It has long been a popular route for enjoying the beautiful scenery of Kobe. In 2006, "Night View Information Boards" were installed to help visitors better understand the landscape, enhancing the sightseeing experience. The area is also recognized for its cultural value as a place where nature and urban light harmonize.
The greatest attraction is the night view of Rokko Island and Port Island spreading out below you. The lights from streets and buildings emit a diverse palette of colors—white, blue, yellow, and green—creating a stunning landscape that meets the sea. On clear nights, you may even catch a glimpse of the grand curve of Osaka Bay in the distance. The observatory area is also decorated with greenery, allowing you to enjoy the view in harmony with nature.
The best time for viewing is from the magic hour after sunset through the evening. While the lights are brilliantly vivid late at night, the scenery changes with the seasons. The lights often appear even more radiant during seasons with pleasant sea breezes or specific seasonal light displays. However, please be aware that visibility can change during the winter or during unstable weather.
The primary experience here is the quiet contemplation of the night view. With well-maintained benches and gazebos (azumaya) available, you can sit down and observe the changing expressions of light as time passes. Moving away from the hustle and bustle of the city to look down from this height offers a unique perspective on the urban landscape.
Hachimaki Observatory is situated along the Omuro Rokko Driveway, a popular driving course in the Mt. Rokko range. There are other nearby viewpoints such as Kesseidai and Tenrandai that offer even higher vantage points. Since access is primarily by car, we recommend combining this visit with a drive through the nearby cafes and nature-rich areas.
Temperatures drop significantly in mountainous areas at night, so please bring clothing appropriate for the season. We highly recommend bringing warm layers for nighttime outings. Additionally, as you may need to enter or exit parking areas on curves, please drive with extreme caution. To protect the environment, please follow local manners and ensure you take all trash back with you.
