Higashigohata Tanada is a stunning collection of terraced rice fields located in the Yutani district of Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan. It was selected by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 1999 as one of "Japan's 100 Best Rice Terraces." While most rice terraces are located deep within mountain ranges, the Higashigohata area is unique because the coastal hills descend directly toward the sea. This creates a rare and breathtaking landscape where the terraced fields appear to merge seamlessly with the Sea of Japan.
Historically, securing water resources has been a vital challenge in this region. The irrigation for these terraces relies on precious water sources such as "Fukada Tameike" (irrigation ponds), which have supported local agriculture for generations. The area also blends tradition with modern agricultural initiatives, such as the production of "Yokihime no Yume" branded rice and the promotion of dairy farming through the introduction of Tajima cattle. The practice of sustainable agriculture, including soil improvement through grazing cattle, highlights the deep harmony between the local culture and the natural environment.
The most spectacular sight is the sunset over the Sea of Japan, followed by the appearance of "Isaribi" (fishing boat lights). From mid-May to early August, countless lights from fishing boats float on the dark sea, creating a mystical and ethereal atmosphere alongside the terraced landscape. Additionally, the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons; for instance, the water-filled terraces in spring and summer offer a mirror-like reflection of the sky. It is one of the premier photographic spots in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Visitors primarily enjoy observing the natural landscape and photography. The sight of the fishing lights at night is a famous fusion of nature and human activity. You can also observe the diverse ecosystem of local flora and fauna through the network of waterways and irrigation ponds.
Nagato City offers many other attractions. You can include the famous Motonosumi Shrine or areas related to the poet Misuzu Kaneko in your driving itinerary. A scenic drive along the coastline of the Sea of Japan is also highly recommended.
