Higashihama Beach is a premier destination located in Iwami Town, Tottori Prefecture, renowned for its exceptional water clarity. The water quality in this area has been officially rated as 'AA' by Tottori Prefecture, the highest possible grade, ensuring a stunningly transparent sea experience. The coastline forms a beautiful crescent shape, lined with soft, fine white sand that creates a luxurious resort-like atmosphere. The beach is a vital part of the San'in Kaigan Quasi-National Park and the San'in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark, preserving its rich natural environment.
The Higashihama coastline has long been protected as part of the San'in Kaigan Quasi-National Park (designated in 1955) and the San'in Kaigan National Park (designated in 1963). Furthermore, the area was certified as part of the Global Geoparks Network (GGN) in 2010, a testament to its dynamic geological history. This coast is also celebrated in Japan, having been selected in prestigious lists such as the '100 Best Sceneries of Japan' and the '100 Best White Sand and Green Pine Beaches of Japan,' establishing its status as a premier coastal destination.
The greatest draw is the breathtaking view where the transparent sea meets the curved shoreline. Beyond swimming, the area features rocky shores and sea caves, providing an ideal environment for nature exploration and tide-pooling. Additionally, Nishiwaki Coast—a location frequently featured in travel posters—is just a 5-minute walk away, allowing you to experience the grandeur of the San'in Kaigan Geopark up close. The Higashihama Observation Point also offers a high-angle view of the sweeping coastline.
The peak season for swimming at Higashihama Beach is primarily from late July to mid-August. During this period, the strong sunlight enhances the sea's transparency, making it the perfect time for snorkeling and swimming. The contrast between the white sand and the deep blue sea is most striking during midday. Please note that the official opening dates for the beach vary by year; it is highly recommended to check the latest information from the Iwami Town Tourism Association before your visit.
This area offers a variety of activities that embrace the natural environment. For water lovers, you can enjoy snorkeling or try surfing and Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) in the nearby Uradome Coast area. You can also experience local culture through unique activities such as 'Ago' (flying fish) catching or traditional 'Jibiki-ami' (shore seine net fishing). The 'Umi no Ie Kugami Parking' area adjacent to the beach is well-equipped with flush toilets, hot showers, and foot-washing stations for your comfort. There is also a dedicated 'Higashihama Coast Outdoor Facility (BBQ House)' for those wishing to enjoy a barbecue. When planning for swimming or exploring the rocks, please bring swimwear, beach sandals, and a change of clothes. Since the terrain includes rocky areas, sturdy footwear is recommended to protect your feet. While shower facilities are available nearby, please bring your own towels and sunscreen.
