The Hida Takayama Museum of Art is a specialized museum for glass art and fine furniture, nestled within the serene beauty of Sanctuary Court Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. The museum boasts a world-class collection of over 1,000 pieces, ranging from extremely rare glass art produced globally between the 16th and 20th centuries to exquisite Art Nouveau and Art Deco masterpieces, as well as historic 19th-century furniture and lighting. More than just an exhibition space, it functions as an "Art Gallery Resort," where visitors can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life to immerse themselves in the sublime art of light and reflection.
The museum's predecessor was the original Hida Takayama Museum, which opened in 1997. After a temporary closure in 2020, it was reborn on April 11, 2024, as part of the renewal project by Resorttrust. Now integrated into the membership-based luxury resort "Sanctuary Court Takayama Art Gallery Resort," the museum preserves its historical collections while blending them with a modern, high-end resort atmosphere. This creates a unique space where traditional aesthetics and contemporary luxury coexist seamlessly.
The museum is divided into several themed exhibition rooms, each offering a unique interplay of light and beauty:
The museum reveals different charms depending on the season. We highly recommend visiting during the lush greenery of early summer or during times of day when the natural light is most beautiful. From May to August, the museum hosts special events, such as a limited-time afternoon tea inspired by the museum's fountain, served at the on-site Italian restaurant, "RISTORANTE OZIO." Visit during the bright daylight hours to appreciate the transparency of the glass, or toward the evening to enjoy a more contemplative and immersive atmosphere.
Beyond visual appreciation, visitors can experience art through all five senses. Seasonal special exhibitions offer deeper dives into specific collections. Since the museum is part of Sanctuary Court Takayama, you can seamlessly transition from art appreciation to a luxurious lifestyle, enjoying gourmet dining at the on-site restaurant or sophisticated shopping at the boutique.
The museum is located within the Sanctuary Court Takayama resort facility. The complex features "RISTORANTE OZIO," an upscale Italian restaurant, and a refined boutique, allowing for a seamless and elegant stay. Additionally, the nearby Takayama city area is famous for its historic streetscapes and rich natural surroundings, making the museum an excellent centerpiece for a high-end Takayama sightseeing itinerary.
