Heiwadai Park is a prominent urban park located in the hilly area of Shimokita-cho, Miyazaki City. The most striking feature of the park is the 'Tower of Peace' (Heiwa no To) that rises majestically in the center. Surrounded by well-maintained walking paths, open recreational areas, and seasonal flower beds, the park serves as a beloved relaxation spot for locals and visitors alike. The lush greenery provides a refreshing sense of nature even while staying close to the city center.
The history of this park dates back to 1940. As part of the '2600th Anniversary Imperial Year Project,' the 'Ametsuchi no Hashira' (Pillar of Heaven and Earth) was constructed alongside the surrounding plaza. At the time of its construction, the project involved significant labor and resources, and the design was intended to symbolize national strength, often depicted alongside Mount Fuji.
Following World War II, under the direction of the GHQ, certain names and symbols associated with State Shintoism were temporarily removed. Later, in 1957, the area was designated as a city park, and efforts were made to restore its status as a symbol of peace. A significant historical milestone occurred in 1964 when the Tower of Peace served as the second starting point for the Olympic Torch Relay during the Tokyo Olympics. Today, it remains a cherished site for both recreation and reflection on peace.
The centerpiece of the park is the historically significant Tower of Peace. The changing scenery throughout the seasons is another major draw. For instance, in early summer, the park is adorned with vibrant Hydrangeas (Ajisai), while flower beds featuring pansies and petunias add colorful accents to the landscape. Visitors can also enjoy the harmonious blend of nature and history through the stone statues and lush, well-maintained forests scattered throughout the grounds.
The park is open 24 hours a day, offering different atmospheres depending on the time. During the day, you can enjoy the bright sunlight illuminating the colorful flower beds and lush trees. The period from March to August is particularly beautiful, as the Hydrangeas and other seasonal flowers are in full bloom. Early morning or late afternoon are excellent times to observe the striking silhouette of the Tower of Peace against the soft, ambient light.
Heiwadia Park is an ideal environment for light exercise and leisure. You can enjoy walking along the paved paths or engaging in various recreational activities in the open plazas. The park is also managed through the 'Park Master' volunteer program, where community members participate in cleaning and maintaining the flower beds. This community-driven approach to preserving the natural environment is a unique characteristic of the park.
The area surrounding the park includes various cultural facilities, such as the Miyazaki Prefectural Comprehensive Cultural Park. It is also easily accessible via the Miyazaki Kotsu bus network, making it a convenient stop for travelers moving through Miyazaki City.
