Hekinan Seaside Aquarium is a municipal facility located within the Hekinan Seaside Park in Hekinan City, Aichi Prefecture. Since its opening in 1982, it has become widely known as the "Hekinan Marine Dome," a name that encompasses both the first-floor aquarium and the second-floor Hekinan City Youth Marine Science Museum. The facility houses approximately 4,000 creatures across 300 different species, primarily focusing on fish found along the Japanese coast, providing a deep look into the local marine ecosystem.
Opened on July 4, 1982, this facility has long served as a hub for regional nature education. The structure is a two-story reinforced concrete building situated within the vast 120,000 m² Hekinan Seaside Park. The aquarium plays a vital role in preserving and showcasing the natural environment of the region, with a strong emphasis on the biological diversity of the Ise and Mikawa Bays.
The centerpiece of the aquarium is its collection of Japanese coastal fish. Visitors can observe a wide variety of roughly 300 species, making the local sea life feel much closer. A significant feature is the facility's dedication to the protection and display of rare, endangered Japanese freshwater fish. Additionally, the integrated biotope allows visitors to feel a connection to nature through its seamless display design. On the second floor, the "Hekinan City Youth Marine Science Museum" offers interactive learning experiences, such as quiz rallies under the theme "Water - From Forest to Sea."
The aquarium is typically open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. During the summer vacation period, closing time is extended to 6:00 PM, allowing visitors to enjoy the exhibits during the cooler evening hours. Depending on the season, the facility hosts various events such as nature observation sessions, craft workshops, and sketching competitions. It is highly recommended to check the seasonal program before visiting. Please note that the facility is closed on Mondays (if a Monday is a public holiday, the museum will close on Tuesday instead).
Beyond simple observation, the facility offers various educational activities. The second-floor science museum features interactive exhibits like quiz rallies to help visitors learn about water cycles and marine ecosystems. Seasonal events, such as
