Heijo Palace Site Historical Park is a national park that preserves and reconstructs the architectural legacy of the Nara period. This area is part of a World Heritage site, featuring significant historical remains scattered across a vast landscape. Visitors can enjoy free-roaming strolls through the park, immersing themselves in a serene environment where history meets nature.
This site marks the location of Heijo-kyo, the capital city during the Nara period. The park serves as a vital site for understanding the structure and layout of the ancient capital through its preserved and reconstructed ruins. The park features impressive reconstructions such as the Suzaku Gate and the Daigokuden (Great Hall). The expansive grounds are well-maintained, with designated paths to explore the historical sites. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. One of the most popular times to visit is during the cherry blossom season (Sakura), with blooming information typically available around late March. Because the park is exceptionally large, we highly recommend using a bicycle to get around efficiently. You can utilize rental bicycle services such as Nara Bike Share (Docomo Bike Share) or Hello Cycling to explore the grounds. Additionally, some facilities occasionally host special events featuring AR (Augmented Reality) experiences to bring the ancient history to life.
The park houses the Tenpyo Miharashi-kan, an exhibition facility that provides deeper insights into the site. For those traveling by car, the Prefectural Nara Meguri Heijo Palace Site Mae parking lot is available. The site is also accessible via major railway stations such as Kintetsu Yamato-Saidaiji Station and Kintetsu Shin-Omiya Station.
Due to the vast scale of the park, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for outdoor activity. While many visitors arrive via bus or walking from nearby stations, many prefer public transportation. If you plan to take professional photography or participate in specific events, please check the official website in advance. Note that parking lots can become very crowded during peak tourist seasons, so please plan your travel accordingly.
