Hattori Shrine is a venerable shrine located in the Yamashiro Onsen area of Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It enshrines Amenohazuchi-no-kami, the deity of weaving. The shrine grounds are famous for their breathtaking natural scenery, most notably a massive evergreen oak tree over 200 years old, which is celebrated as one of the "Heisei Yamashiro Eight Views." The area is densely forested with species such as evergreen oaks (Sudajii), machilus, and camellias, creating a perfect harmony between spiritual history and the natural world.
The history of this shrine is deeply rooted in the past, with records of its existence dating back as far as the year 927. While the shrine once boasted a magnificent main hall, historical records indicate that the original structure was lost to the flames of war during the conflict involving Asakura Yoshikage in 1552. Although the shrine was once discontinued during the late Edo period, it was revitalized and relocated to its current site in 1875 (Meiji 8). Following a merger with Hakusan Shrine, which enshrines Kukuri-hime-no-kami, it established its status as a local shrine. It has long served as a significant spiritual center for the local community, particularly as a site dedicated to the deity of weaving.
The most striking feature of the shrine is its lush, verdant landscape. The 200-year-old evergreen oak stands as a majestic centerpiece, earning its place among the prestigious Heisei Yamashiro Eight Views. Visitors can wander through a natural forest composed of various trees like machilus and camellia, which contribute to the profound sense of serenity and spiritual stillness that defines the shrine's atmosphere.
The landscape undergoes beautiful transformations throughout the seasons. In the summer, visitors can enjoy the rhythmic sounds of the cicadas (semi-shigure), while the autumn brings the crisp sounds of insects in the cooling air. The colors and textures of the natural forest change with the seasons, offering a different perspective of the flora each time.
