Hashigui-iwa is a remarkable geological formation located in Kushimoto Town, Wakayama Prefecture. It consists of a line of more than 40 rock pillars stretching approximately 850 meters along the coastline. The name "Hashigui-iwa" literally means "piles of bridge pilings," as the pillars resemble the posts used to support a bridge. This striking landscape was sculpted by the relentless power of the sea, leaving behind only the hardest parts of the rock. The contrast between the dark, weathered pillars and the bright blue sea and sky creates a truly spectacular view.
The site is deeply connected to the legends of Kobo Daishi (Kukai), the founder of Shingon Buddhism. According to local folklore, Kobo Daishi once engaged in a wager with an "Amano-jaku" (a mischievous spirit or demon). It is said that the spirit erected these massive stone pillars in a single night as part of the legendary contest. This blend of natural phenomenon and spiritual history makes the site a culturally significant landmark for the region.
