Haruna Lake is a scenic caldera lake formed by the eruption of Mt. Haruna. The landscape is characterized by the majestic view of Mt. Haruna (Haruna-fuji) rising behind the lake, surrounded by lush mountains. During the Taisho era, this area was a favorite of cultural figures such as the painter Yumeji Takehisa, who used the scenery as inspiration for his literature and art. Depending on the season, the lake is adorned with cherry blossoms, azaleas, and summer flowers, as well as vibrant autumn foliage. The lakeside area features various hot spring facilities, restaurants, and leisure spots, making it a perfect blend of nature and culture.
The area has a long-standing history of spiritual practice known as "Haruna-ko." Historically, people would visit Haruna Shrine to the south of the lake to perform rituals for rain, bringing sacred spring water back to their fields. Following the development of the nearby Ikaho Onsen in the Meiji era, many intellectuals and artists gathered here. Famous figures like Yumeji Takehisa, Akiko Yosano, and Kyoshi Takahama expressed the beauty of Haruna Lake through their poetry and paintings, cementing its reputation as a place of profound artistic value.
The greatest draw of Haruna Lake is the breathtaking view of Mt. Haruna from the lakeside. Visitors can also immerse themselves in the world of the great artists at the "Yumeji Takehisa Atelier." Nature lovers will enjoy the fresh spring water flowing from the surrounding mountains and the seasonal blooms. Another must-see is the Funaotaki Waterfall, where you can witness water cascading down a dramatic 60-meter cliff, showcasing the raw beauty of nature.
Peak activity at Haruna Lake occurs from April to November. In Spring (April–May), enjoy cherry blossoms and azaleas. In early summer, the area is filled with summer flowers. Summers are perfect for water activities and boating, while Autumn (October–November) offers stunning views of the mountains turning red, reflected in the lake. In Winter (December–March), while some leisure facilities close, you can enjoy the quiet, snowy landscapes and occasionally observe activities on the ice. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours for boating or to catch the sunset behind Mt. Haruna.
There are many ways to enjoy the lakeside. You can rent various charming boats, such as duck-shaped, ladybug-shaped, or coffee cup-shaped boats. For a unique traditional experience, try a ride in a "Tote Horse Carriage" to tour the lakeside. The area also offers nearby hot spring resorts, campgrounds, and ski resorts, making it an ideal destination for an extended stay or outdoor adventure.
The area around Haruna Lake is well-equipped with many sightseeing and accommodation facilities. For those looking to relax, there are many hot spring facilities along the lake or in the adjacent Ikaho Onsen area. The surrounding mountains also host well-maintained campgrounds and ski resorts, serving as a base for outdoor enthusiasts. Local restaurants serve regional specialties, including wakasagi (smelt) and dishes made with seasonal mountain vegetables.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for strolling around the lake and visiting the waterfall. Please note that reaching Funaotaki Waterfall requires walking up a path with some uneven terrain.
