Harimazaka Sakura Trees is a beautiful cherry blossom-lined path stretching approximately 460 meters along a section of the Ring Road No. 3 in Koishikawa, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo. A standout feature is its immense width of about 40 meters, where the central median has been transformed into a lush, park-like space. The promenade is dotted with sculptures and benches, creating an open, airy atmosphere in the heart of the city. In spring, roughly 120 Yoshino cherry trees bloom in unison, creating a magnificent pink tunnel. It is a beloved spot for both locals and tourists seeking a moment of tranquility away from the urban bustle.
The name "Harimazaka" is derived from the former residence of the feudal lord Matsudaira Harimori, which once stood in this area. The road design itself is a result of reconstruction efforts following the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and post-war urban planning, intended to create wide, green-filled boulevards in Tokyo. In 1960, as part of a community-led movement to "fill the entire area with flowers," the central median was renovated and paved, and Yoshino cherry trees were planted with the cooperation of local residents. Around 1995, the layout was further refined to include the current pedestrian walkways, optimizing the space for both traffic and leisure.
The main attraction is the continuous line of Yoshino cherry trees along the central median. The resulting cherry blossom tunnel provides a powerful sense of spring. Visitors can sit on the various benches placed along the path to enjoy the view. Because the path follows the natural slope of the terrain, the scenery changes beautifully as you walk. The area also features a unique aesthetic contrast: the northeastern side has a more traditional Japanese feel, while the southwestern side offers a more Western-style landscape, allowing for diverse walking experiences.
The most spectacular time to visit is from late March to early April, during the peak bloom of the Yoshino cherry trees. During this period, the entire area is bathed in soft pink hues. While the blossoms are beautiful in the bright daylight, the area also offers a serene atmosphere in the evening, with the silhouettes of the trees illuminated by streetlights. While the greenery is pleasant year-round, a visit during the peak flowering season is highly recommended for the full experience.
The primary activity here is a leisurely stroll. The wide, spacious walkway is perfect for slow walks while soaking in the scenery. It is an ideal spot for reading a book on a bench or practicing photography. You can also enjoy a cultural walk by observing the sculptures integrated into the urban landscape. If any special seasonal events are held, visiting during the cherry blossom season will allow you to experience the most iconic seasonal scenery.
The site is located in a quiet, residential neighborhood of Bunkyo. The surrounding streets are characterized by historical buildings and a peaceful atmosphere, making it a lovely area to explore on foot. Since it is adjacent to the major Ring Road No. 3 (Kan-san-dori), it is easily accessible and can be easily integrated into a broader Tokyo sightseeing itinerary.
