Hara Museum ARC is a contemporary art museum nestled in the lush, natural environment of Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture. The building, designed by renowned architect Arata Isozaki, features a striking symmetrical layout centered around Gallery A, which boasts a distinctive pyramid-shaped roof. The minimalist exhibition spaces are designed to let natural light pour in through top lights, highlighting the art beautifully. The museum also houses permanent works by world-renowned artists such as Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Othoniel, creating a seamless dialogue between the architecture, the art, and the surrounding nature.
The museum's roots trace back to the original Hara Museum in Shinagawa, Tokyo, founded in 1979. In 1988, the annex, Hara Museum ARC, was opened in Shibukawa, Gunma. In 2021, the two institutions were integrated to become the new 'Hara Museum ARC.' The name 'ARC' symbolizes the 'Arc en Ciel' (rainbow) and represents the museum's role as an 'Art Center.' It continues a legacy of fostering international exchange and creating new value through contemporary art.
The museum features three main galleries specialized for contemporary art. Gallery A, with its pyramid roof, and the flanking Galleries B and C, offer open spaces filled with natural light. A standout feature is the 'Kankai-an' special exhibition room, a space inspired by the Shoin-zukuri architectural style. Here, traditional Japanese aesthetics—using materials like wood, stone, and plaster—blend beautifully with modern art. Additionally, you can enjoy a stroll through the outdoor areas to encounter permanent works by international and domestic artists.
The museum is open from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The bright daylight hours are particularly beautiful, as the natural light from the top lights illuminates the galleries. The scenery changes with the seasons, making it a wonderful place to observe the shifting light and the deepening greenery of the surrounding forest. The museum is located on a vast site adjacent to the Ikaho Green Farm. This allows for a wonderful travel itinerary combining art appreciation with nature experiences at the farm. It is also easily accessible from the Ikaho Onsen area, making it a perfect addition to a hot spring getaway. Some combo tickets with the Ikaho Green Farm may also be available.
To protect the artworks, please do not touch the exhibits. Photography is prohibited in areas marked with a 'No Photography' sign, and commercial filming without permission is strictly forbidden. Please refrain from eating, drinking, or making phone calls inside the galleries. Additionally, avoid using ink-based writing instruments (like ballpoint or fountain pens) near the art. Large luggage and umbrellas should be kept in the provided lockers or umbrella stands. While there is no specific dress code, comfortable walking shoes are recommended for navigating the galleries. For payments at the ticket counter or cafe, both cash and credit cards are accepted.
