It is said that the site was once the residence of Okubo Hizaemon, a high-ranking retainer of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Today, it serves as a popular destination for both domestic and international visitors, hosting weddings, banquets, and seasonal viewing events. The expansive grounds feature centuries-old bonsai, a serene pond filled with koi fish, and a diverse array of seasonal flora.
The history of this site is profound, originating as the residence of the 17th-century samurai Okubo Hizaemon. With over three centuries of landscaping history, the space maintains a seamless fusion of traditional Japanese architecture and natural beauty. The design of the historic buildings and the garden structures follows classical Japanese styles, preserving its immense cultural value through the generations.

Please note that the tea house operates on a specific schedule, typically open from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. The scenery of the pond and the play of light change beautifully depending on the time of day.
The tea house provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy matcha and seasonal sweets while overlooking the beautiful garden. Depending on the operating days, you can immerse yourself in a traditional tea ceremony experience. The vast grounds are also used for various events and strolls, providing an excellent environment to observe traditional Japanese architectural styles and garden structures.
Happo-en is located near the Shirokanedai area, adjacent to the popular Shinagawa and Tennozu districts. It serves as a peaceful historical oasis nestled within a modern urban landscape of residential and commercial districts in Tokyo.
For exploring the garden, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. When visiting the tea house, please follow the facility's specific etiquette and rules. For payments, the facility accepts cash as well as major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, and UnionPay. Since the tea house has limited hours (11:00 AM – 3:00 PM on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays), please check the schedule in advance. While some English support is available, please observe standard Japanese etiquette during your visit.
