Guide
Hanazono Ajisai-en is a lush botanical garden situated at a high altitude of approximately 1,000 meters in Katsuragi, Wakayama Prefecture. This elevated location offers a refreshing escape where visitors can witness the arrival of early summer through the vibrant colors of hydrangeas and peonies. With roughly 3,000 hydrangea plants and 1,000 peonies creating a stunning contrast against the deep green forest, the garden provides a deeply healing and moving experience. Located along the beautiful Koya Ryujin Skyline, it is a special destination to disconnect from daily life and breathe in the pure, mountain air.
The garden displays a constantly changing landscape of seasonal flora. The primary attraction is the sea of approximately 3,000 hydrangeas that bloom during the rainy season. The sight of blue, purple, and white blossoms cascading down the slopes is incredibly photogenic. Additionally, in mid-to-late May, the garden features about 1,000 peonies in full bloom. The harmony between the lush greenery and the vivid floral colors makes this place truly worthy of the name "Celestial Garden."

The best time to visit depends on which flowers you wish to see. For peony lovers, the peak season is from mid-May to late May, offering an early taste of summer. For hydrangea enthusiasts, the peak occurs from mid-July to mid-August. During the rainy season, the hydrangeas appear particularly brilliant in the soft, misty air. We recommend visiting during bright daylight hours for the best photography of the colorful blooms, or during the calm afternoon hours to enjoy a relaxing stroll in the cool breeze.
Visitors can enjoy forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) while walking through the crisp, clean mountain air. Walking amidst the natural colors of the garden is an excellent way to refresh both mind and body. Furthermore, the nearby "Hanazono Seisanbutsu Chokubaijo" (Hanazono Local Produce Market) allows you to purchase fresh, local agricultural products. Stopping by this market during your drive to experience the seasonal flavors of the region is one of the many charms of visiting this area.

The garden is located along the Koya Ryujin Skyline, a famous scenic driving route known for its breathtaking vistas. The surrounding area is dotted with historical sites, including the sacred Mount Koya (Koyasan). Additionally, there are camping facilities like "Hanazono BASE" nearby, allowing you to enjoy an overnight stay in nature. It is a very convenient stop whether you are heading toward Koyasan or simply looking for a beautiful driving destination.
Because the garden is located at an altitude of 1,000m, temperatures can be significantly lower than in the lowlands. Please bring a light jacket or clothing that is easy to layer. As you will be walking through a natural environment, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. When using the local produce market, please ensure you have cash on hand for smooth transactions. To protect the natural environment, please respect the plants and ensure all trash is carried out with you.
