Hanase Nature Park is a part of the Osumi Southern Prefectural Nature Park in Kagoshima Prefecture, where rich natural beauty meets a unique geological landscape. The park's most striking feature is the 'Senjojiki' (Thousand-tatami mats) stone pavement spreading across the Hanase River. This unique terrain consists of smooth, welded tuff stretching approximately 60m wide and 2km long. The way the river flows over the white stone creates a scene reminiscent of blooming white flowers, which is said to be the origin of the name 'Hanase.' The open, verdant scenery offers a profound sense of healing and tranquility to all who visit.
This area is more than just a scenic spot; it holds deep historical significance. Records show that during the Edo period, Lord Shimazu Nariakira, a prominent feudal lord, visited this area to enjoy its magnificent beauty and rest. This overlap of natural artistry and historical depth has preserved the site as a culturally significant landmark. In 1977, the area was officially designated as a natural park by Kagoshima Prefecture to protect its precious environment.
Visitors can fully immerse themselves in the artistry of nature. The vast stone riverbed is an exceptional spot for photography and leisurely strolls. In spring, the landscape is transformed by the blooming of cherry blossoms and wisteria, offering a different face to the park each season. A red arched bridge serves as a beautiful accent to the scenery, harmonizing man-made structure with the natural environment. Because the river is wide and the current is gentle, you can feel the peaceful rhythm of nature.
There are various ways to enjoy the park depending on the season. Spring (April–May) is the best time for cherry blossom viewing and nature walks as the park is filled with color. In August, the 'Yamannaka Concert' allows visitors to enjoy music in the great outdoors. The 'Hanase Park Festival' is also held in spring, featuring local specialty sales and community events. We recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully appreciate the texture of the stone pavement and the clarity of the river water.
There are plenty of activities to experience nature with your whole body. The park is well-equipped with an auto-camping area (including an outdoor 'Goemonburo' bath and cooking areas), a bungalow village with electricity, and a recreation village with beds and kitchen facilities. This makes it an ideal destination for families or groups looking for an overnight stay. Additionally, nearby walking paths and farm tours allow you to connect with local culture through forest bathing and agricultural experiences.
